W L R N Public radio and T V for South Florida

Video On-Demand

WLRN-TV is the PBS Affiliate in Miami, Florida. WLRN-TV provides Public Broadcasting Services in both radio and TV to Southern Florida. In addition WLRN is responsible for providing video services to the Dade County Public School System via 20 ITFS channels to all 300+ schools in the system.

In the past, the station processed orders for video tapes and sent them via truck to each school. This proved to be both costly and time consuming.

To improve access to video programming without increasing the Station's personnel budget they installed a TiltRac Video Library Manager with 10 Panasonic AG-5700 VCRs, a TiltRac Multi-Channel Character Generator, a Hedco Audio Video Router Switch and a TiltRac Control Computer with a multi-line phone board and Automated Response Menu that provides automated access to over 200 video titles.

How It Works

Teachers call the Video Library Manager (known as Teacher's Choice) using a touch tone telephone. Using the key pad on the phone they can browse the listing of titles and order a program to play on-demand or at the scheduled time of their choosing. In addition to scheduling a video program teachers can review the current schedule for a particular title to determine if an existing time meets their needs.

TiltRac's Software is capable of resolving scheduling conflicts and advising the teacher which channel will carry the requested program. At the scheduled time the teacher turns on the TV in the classroom and watches the requested program.

When video programs are not broadcasting, the TiltRac MultiChannel Character Generator displays the schedule for each channel. This information is updated automatically and old schedules are erased each night at midnight to make room for the next day's schedule.

System Upgrade

Due to the success of the first system WLRN has installed a second machine that increased the number of automated channels to 10 with 660 video tapes on-line to the school system.
